Entry: ARGUMENT WRITING 2 Feb 4, 2006

The following appeared in a letter to the editor in the journal Health Master

Statistic gathered over the past three decades show that the death rate is higher among those who have no jobs than among those with regular employment. Unemployment, just like heart disease and cancer, is a significant health issue. While many health care advocates promote increased government funding for medical research and public health care, it would be folly to increase government funding if doing so were to affect the nation economy adversely and ultimately cause a rise in unemployment. A healthy economy means a healthy citizen.

The author stated about the statistic of death rate for the last three decades implying that unemployment have higher death rate compare with the employed one. This confirmation is not precise enough to conclude that it can represent the whole nation. The sample region for the survey should be taken into consideration. The population characteristics and distribution will also affect the statistic result.

Perhaps most of the population at the region where the statistic was made is at their old age so that they are all unemployed at that time and old people usually having health problem. So it’s possible that only at that region that the death rate of the unemployment is increasing.

There is another possibility for the increasing in the death rate of unemployment is that the unemployed already carry a severe health problem before, so that companies don’t accept them as employees. If this is the case, it doesn’t mean that unemployment caused the bereavement, but eventually the disease does.

A very swift conclusion taken from the statistic alone is not effective. There are lot of other consideration to think and ponder of before made the conclusion. Besides, without a further medical research to improve the health life of the citizen, people won’t be effective in working and nation’s economy wouldn’t be improved with low human resource healthy. We can’t deny that unemployment is also one of the factors why the death rate is increasing. People without employment tend to be despised by the family and society. Stressed of the family burden will pressure them and come to some severe health problem. So both must work together, unemployment must be taken care of and in the same time medical research also still have to go on with even funding.
