Entry: ARGUMENT WRITING 1 Feb 4, 2006

A petition by Classen University students to the school's administration:

The purpose of higher education is to prepare students for the future, but Classen students are at a serious disadvantage in the competition of post-college employment due to the University's burdensome breadth requirement. Classen's job placement rate is substantially lower than placement rates of many top-ranked schools. Classen students would be more attractive to employers if they have more time to take advanced courses in their specialty, rather than being required to spend fifteen percent of their time at Classen taking courses outside their subject area. We demand therefore that the University abandon or drastically cut back on its breadth requirements.

The Classen students demand for the cutting of the requirements by the university. They thought that the requirement is useless for them in getting their future. In the petition, they stated reason of their demanding which is the lose of job placement. Their argument is not strong enough since there are no clear evidence from the petition and no specific data was mentioned for the accuracy of their conclusion.

The petition stated that most of the Classen students have lost competition in the job placement, but there is no significant data to support this statement. There is a possibility that the market that time are heading to a new fresh industry field which Classen University hasn't provided that kind of education of human resource. There is chance that neighboring state which is already heading to this field and the university there has been provided graduates that suit the field. This may lead to higher intake of graduates from other university

The authors of the petition try to compare the job placement with top-rank school. Nevertheless, they don't mention the method of comparison. There is a possibility that the comparison is done between Classen and other top-rank university at the different state. If this is the case, there might be differences in the demographic population distribution. Perhaps the students are lesser so that the job placements are higher at that state.

There is a misconception of the objective purpose for the higher education of the term 'future' between the university and the student's point of view. Perhaps from university perspective, preparing a future for a student is not merely making student getting job easily. There are a lot of other factors that determine the term future, such as broaden point of view, where student can see things differently in a certain issue comparing to the specialist in the field.

There is still a possibility that if students are taught specialized only on their subject, they still can lose in the competition due to their individually incompetence. With this lack of argument's evidence, perhaps the students can try to see the university point of view about their requirement. They still have their uniqueness compare to other university with this specialist point of view. And usually whatever we studied in university is usually will be useless when we really go into the real world, since there are still a lot of things that we haven't learned.
